Painting roses can be difficult, but with some practice, it becomes more natural. One of the most important things to consider when painting is color mixing. You should always mix your colors on a separate palette before you start using them. This will help prevent making mistakes that are hard to cover up later on in the painting process.
Another thing you need to think about how light reflects off of different surfaces, which also applies to paint itself! When you apply lighter colors like yellow or blue over darker ones like red or purple, they might not show up as well depending on what kind of surface you're applying them too. Let's start drawing with our 5 step by step methods below.
Paint Roses in Acrylics: Method 1
Materials You Need
- 9" x 12" Stretched canvas
- Medium magenta acrylic paint
- Cadmium yellow medium acrylic paint
- Brilliant purple acrylic paint
- Hookers green acrylic paint
- Titanium white acrylic paint
- Burnt umber acrylic paint
- Small round brush (Size 6)
- Small flat brush (¼")
Step- 1
Take a Pencil and do a rough sketch of where your rose flowers will go and how big you want them to be. Simple circles will do.
Step- 2
Make small curved strokes using your main paint color and fill in your rose shape with the small round brush. A real rose has slightly overlapping strokes as well, in order to give it an authentic appearance. It looks like the petals of the outer petals form triangles.
In the next step, we'll be layering the paints, so the strokes between the commas don't need to be perfect, either.
Step- 3
Clean off the brush that you used in the first step. Pick up some of the shadow colors on your brush and make shadows using the same stroke as in the previous steps. Fill in all of the other white space with color, too.
Step- 4
Clean off the brush you used in the previous step and pick up some highlight color.
Draw the petals halfway up, then when you get to the outer petals, draw them a little bit larger. Applying highlights on top of the other colors is what makes the rose look 3D and creates depth. If your highlight strokes overlap with other layers below them, that's okay. Make sure that some of the main color and shadow color still shows through in some places.
Step- 5
Clean your brush, and then paint a thin line of white paint on the edge of some petals. Make sure you don't paint the whole petal or all the petals. So we are done, we painted the first yellow rose nicely.
Step- 6
As we did before, follow the same instructions to draw the second yellow color flower.
Step- 7
Follow the same instructions to draw the top magenta color rose.
Step- 8
Same things to do to draw the downside magenta rose. This one will be larger than the previous one.
Step- 9
The last rose we are going to paint is a lavender/purple color and larger than others.
Step- 10
Add some green paint to your palette and mix in a shade and highlight. You can do this by taking burnt umber and white paint. With a flat brush, use the hooker's green to make flower stems. You can add lightest green as highlights on the stem if you want too using downward strokes.
Step- 11
You can paint in some foliage and rose leaves using the 3 green tones you developed in the last step.
Step- 12
Add some magenta and white paint to your rose bouquet and paint a pink bow to match
Watercolor Roses : Method 2
Step- 1
We're going to start by taking some water on the brush. Then we will wipe off some of it and wet the paint. You want your first bit of paint to be slightly wet, but not too wet, so make sure it has a watery consistency. Now we are going to do the center of the rose – this will be very simple because you want this one to be darker. We're just going to put dark outlines around them.
Step- 2
Now we're going to take a little more water and add in some more paint. This time though, it will be very liquid. Now, you are going to connect these by making just movements with your hands that sort of look like petals that you are mixing them together. Add even more paint if you want to. You are just roughly making the shape for now so don't spend much time on it at all.
Step- 3
We're going to take more water, and we're going to add in some purple. Now we want to keep our color not too dark. So we're just adding little bits of color and mixing them together. You can use any colors you want – even blues if you want. I like the red and the purple together.
Step- 4
Put some yellow on your brush and make it nice and watery.
Step- 5
We are going to go back in and make some changes. Get your brush wet with water, then put the red paint on the brush. Paint back in some of the detail that you missed before.
Step- 6
Next, we are going to take the tissue and make it into a ball. Make sure that you make it very thin. Then we will remove some of this wet paint using the tissue. With the tissue, add some highlights where you think they should go.
Step- 7
I'm going to go back and make some changes by blending out some of those areas.
Step- 8
Now we are going to paint the stem and leaf of the rose. Use some green color to paint it. Make a little curvy line first for the stem, then blend in some green color where the stem meets the flower. After that, paint two easy to paint leaves and we are done painting our first rose.
Step- 9

Oil Painting Roses: Method 3
I'm going to be having a go at a very challenging but also extremely valuable exercise painting flowers the colors I'm using are titanium white lemon yellow cadmium yellow Naples yellow ochre cadmium red light alizarin crimson transparent oxide red war umber Terra ver Viridian cobalt blue ultramarine blue and ivory black
when laying out my colors I'll always place them in this exact same order so that I'll always remember where they are on the palette and I won't waste any time trying to find them once I've mapped out the overall masses.
Step- 1

Step- 2
The first color you have to put down is a transparent wash of dark green for the leaves. Use an earth color called Terra Ver mixed with war Umber and just a little yellow ochre. If you made green by mixing blue with an opaque yellow, it would not be transparent and so it could mix with colors.
Step- 3
In landscape painting, you can use a lot of transparent washes that are green. In fact, the palette using here is what I would normally use for landscape painting. With this palette, you can mix any color from nature.
Step- 4
Now for the flowers. Start with a color for the shadows. For the pink flower, use alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue and white to create a warm violet. Then put in some war umber around it to give it a shadow.
Step- 5
My next step is to mix a color for the shadows in the white flower. A raw umber pigment like the one I'm using here is an excellent choice for neutral colors.
Step- 6
After the shadows of the white flowers appear on the canvas, I mix a color for the brightest petals. I use titanium white, Terra vert, and Naples yellow. When applying this highlight color try to replicate the appearance of the petals by placing each brushstroke precisely.
Step- 7
After you paint the lightest petals, mix a color for the background. Use this to carve out their outline and edges. Flowers have a lot of interesting edge variety that your should try to capture if you want your flowers to look realistic. Different hard and soft edges can make your flowers more realistic-looking.
Step- 8
Paint the petals. Paint them with a light color, and then paint the shadows. Mix a color for the medium value petals, and start painting some of them too. This is hard to do because roses are complicated plants with many different types of petals. If you try to paint everything that you can see it will be difficult for you to get all of the details right. You should just try your best not to paint anything that you don't need or want in your painting, but this can be difficult at first because it's hard to know what to leave out sometimes.
Step- 9
Now, you want to look at the dark color. You need to paint many details. But if you put too many things in, you will have to take some out later. Use a wider variety of different colors for this demo. I am trying to mix colors that are either warmer or cooler than what I see here. For example, I added a cool green made with Viridian and lemon yellow in the shadows of this flower and I added a warm highlight mixed with white and Naples yellow for some of the small petals in the middle of this flower.
Step- 10
After finishing the white flower, move on to finishing the pink one with bright colors. This pink is probably the most pure color in this painting. We used only alizarin crimson and white to make it. For this one, use a process that is similar to what we did for the other white flower by creating soft transitions and carving out hard edges with the background.
Step- 11
Add some dark colors in the middle of the flowers, and they should be almost pure alizarin crimson.
Step- 12

One Stroke Painting Roses : Method 4
I'm going to show you here how to cane a rose
Step- 1
Pick up some light color to start, like a warm white. Take ⅔ of the purple and ⅓ of the white. Pick up some floating medium to get a smooth texture when you paint. I'm using acrylic paints and this one has little water in it which is what you want if you are "double loading" with two different colors at once, or gliding your brush over one color and another at the same time.
This way we can use light and dark colors together to get shading and blending all in one stroke. So now just wave the brush a little bit on the canvas. Now painting the outer skirt and just kind of waving the brush around, hold the brush handle straight up and down picking up more paint. Try not to get your colors mixed together. Just wave it gently. So here is our outer petal or outer skirt in the picture above.
Step- 2
Now add another layer of petals on the inside here. Pick up more paint now and you just need to use the floating medium every two or three strokes, not too much though. It will mix your colors and make it muddy if you do that.
Step- 3
Okay, now switch to a smaller brush. Use a 12 flat and pick up the same colors; ⅓ white and ⅔ purple. You really want paint to go into the brush, picking up some of that medium along the way. And then we'll add our inside bud by using this color, bring it all across inside to make the bud.
Step- 4
Now paint some more. Fill the empty space with small petals. Fill this blank space with a little more white on the brush. Okay finally there's the rose.
Step-5
Now, pick up the script line. And put some gold color on it. Put a few dots in the center of the rose you painted and make it pop out. Pick up white paint to make that pop out more. Tap tap tap – do that until you are satisfied.
Step- 6
Switch back to the big brush and pick up green paint. Make sure you have dark green on the dark side of the brush and lighter shades in there and to blend go back and forth. Now paint leaves. We are starting under that rose because we want it to come from underneath and paint around it too. Now paint the leaves. Paint starts right underneath the rose. And paint the leaves by rotating your brush over there.
Step- 7
Do the same thing, rotate and end on your chisel pull to complete the first leaves. Create a little stem on the leaves.
Step- 8
Let's paint more two leaves by using the same method, one on the opposite side and one on the top right side of the flower.
Step- 9
Now switch to the smaller brush. We have to paint some one-stroke leaves right on the top and some on the downside. Hold the brush handle straight up and down and slowly release pressure.
Step- 10
Take the script liner and draw some curlicues or tendrils around the flower. Mix a little water with green paint to get it ready for painting, and make sure it is thin enough so that it can move around. Be very gentle when you paint so that your brush will act like a marker and you will have some nice curves.
Finally, this is a nice rose. I hope you liked it.
Paint Red Rose Bud Watercolor: Method 5
Today, we are doing the rose.
Step- 1
First, you want to figure out the size of your rose. If you are going to make a greeting card for someone, then the size of the rose is important. You should draw the outlines of the roses, including leaves and stem. Add some details at the top. Add water droplets, too.
Step- 2
Now you should take some red paint and start with a little water. Paint the right side petals first. You have to make the color darker in some places. Only paint around that white spot in the water droplet area, leaving it untouched and without any other colors on it. There is also some empty space on this petal that we will paint in later.
Step- 3
So now, clean the brush really quickly. You need to have a softened transition to make the light into the dark and connect to the light shape. Because it's wet, the color would be pretty smooth.
Step- 4
Now, paint on some darker red on the edge of this petal. The new color will blend into the wet space and it will be even darker. I know some of you are scared to use water, but don't be afraid. Just use water and see how it looks, and if you don't like it, you can always take the color out.
Step- 5
At the bottom of the painting add some darker colors. To make them darker use some blue paint. Paint it around the water droplet.
Step- 6
Now change the color. Add some red, but not too much water. If you use too much water, the color might move all over the place. So just put a little bit more of a darker color and it's good! We are finished with one side.
Step- 7
We are going to start coloring the other side, so this time you will start on the right side. Start with darker colors. Take some blue paint and it will be thick. Make sure that you mix less water into your paint. The color should be thick. Now paint around the leaf because it will be green, which is a total opposite color to blue.
Step- 8
So now put in some colors that are thicker. Put in the blue color. Make the colors connect to these new colors. We don't want to have this dark color all the way, so just take the red color and make it connect with these other colors. It's all about wet-into-wet. Keep coming with your brush while it is still wet, and let it make a connection with this other part of your painting.
Step- 9
Be careful. The color changes again. You need more red paint, and I think it's dry enough to connect that one. Connect that, so you can see how the dark color slowly becomes light because of water.
Step- 10
We missed a shape on the bottom of the painting. You can spend time doing that shape while you wait for the painting to dry on the other side. Make it lighter at the bottom and darker at the top, but make sure you use red paint.
Step- 11
Now, the rose is almost there. Add some details on the top side. Give it a little red color and put color over there. Add some petals that are coming up and blocking some light. So now soften this to make it connected. Now this is almost finished with all of the details.
Step- 12
Now start going into the leaf. The leaf is green. To produce a green color mix some yellow color with the blue. Start at the top and come down to the right side, then do this on the other side, but make a darker blue color.
Step- 13
There are a few more leaves and we need to do something else. There is the dark blue color coming up from here. I am going to take some yellow and mix it into the colors. Here we go, just the yellow-green colors. That's good. It's simple now.
Step- 14
The paint on this one is still wet, so I will first work on the other leaves and wait until the others have dried. You can put a darker color underneath. Okay, that's fine.
Step- 15
We will now move on to the water droplet. Just see a little darker edge, a little darker edge. Depending on your preference, you can focus on the lighter or darker color. We want to have a very light tone going through the middle. And then probably enough to spark your imagination.
Step- 16
So, now we should probably add some red color and soften the gap. It's just a matter of softening the gap. Lastly, we must soften the top.
Step- 17
Now it's time to make the leaves. We will make some light green color, but be sure to leave a very thin line of red. I do not want the red color to come into this area of the leaf. Now we are making darker green and touching it. When these colors are wet, they will blend together. Maybe the darker green should be on the opposite side because that part is in shadow, so be sure to also put some dark paint there too.
Step- 18
If you want to do the background, use a big brush. I want the background to be light green with lots of water. Then I will put some blue on it too. But make sure that the color is not too bright – it should be like the drawing. If there is an outside edge, make it darker and then make the highlight pop more by putting some more light on it as well as some more blue on top of that. See if we can do this side too – we can change that if we need to. And finally, we are done!
